Reggae star Buju Banton is out of prison and the Coalition Advocating for Inclusion for Sexual Orientation says his release may not be a bad thing. With an optimistic voice, the coalition’s leader says it’s possible he’s changed.
It could be an opportunity for dialouge on inclusion and forgiveness.
Explaining that he’d never call for anyone to be banned from a country, leader of CAISO, Colin Robinson says there are interesting times ahead. He said, “Debates around homophobia and forgiveness. Has Buju in fact moved on? Can he ever be forgiven for singing tunes that call for people’s murders? These are important debates to be having, especially in the wake of decriminalisation here.”
Robinson says CAISO is open to having the debates that come with such a controversial figure, but he adds that even in debate, clear lines must be drawn. Explaining the importance he said, “CAISO is not a big advocate of shutting down decent debates. We’ve said for example the evangelical council should have as big a platform as we have, but clearly there’s a line that you draw that people can’t go out in public and say kill other people.”
