Double Your Pleasure

outcaribe, December 19, 2018May 11, 2024

Port of Spain, Trinidad

This will satiate the appetite of any vegetarian or lover of tasty food. Doubles are a popular street food in Trinidad and Tobago. They are unique and delicious and can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or a late night snack. It’s a sandwich made with two bara (flat fried bread) filled with channa (curried chick peas) and can be topped with mango, shadon beni, cucumber, coconut, tamarind, and extra pepper sauce (ask for slight pepper if you’d like to spare your tongue from that kind of heat).

Doubles are a must eat when you are there for Carnival (the largest in the Caribbean) which is also the time when the largest gay parties happen in the island’s capital, Port of Spain.

Trinidad and Tobago also had their First Gay Pride in July 2018 which was a celebration of the High Court of Justice in Trinidad and Tobago ruling on April 12, 2018, that the country’s laws criminalizing same-sex intimacy between consenting adults are unconstitutional.
